We have been using these with our own rats and we have finally found some small, affordable packs to offer you. As kidney problems aren't uncommon in older rats, these sticks are a good way to monitor the progress of the condition and see if we are keeping things under control.

Here's a little help to read the strips. Whilst they are not specific to rats, (as we all know, not a lot of products are) they are sold on the site for monitoring not diagnostic purposes. So once you know your rat has renal failure, you can see whether the condition is stabilised by supplements, diet and medication if any is prescribed. Ideally rat urine protein levels should be below 3.0 (+++). 3.0 and above along with a pH greater than 8 to 8.5 may suggest kidney issues. If there is high protein and presence of blood at the higher end of the test strip, then you need to discuss with your vet and ask them to retest the urine with veterinary strips. Taking a photo of the strip next to the coloured guide within the time indicated on the label, to show your vet, is a good idea in general.
